Educating Youth of Detroit about Our World

Green Living Science is dedicated to increasing awareness of environmental issues and personal responsibility through education. It is our mission to encourage understanding of our reliance on our environment, our impact, and the importance of individual decision-making.

      Nurturing Future Leaders in Michigan

Green Living Science provides recycling and environmental education to students in the Detroit Public Schools—more than 25,000 students since 2007! We increase environmental awareness, as well as the scope of science curriculums. Our curriculum is applicable for education sessions and workshops in other school districts, as well as for adult education.

Inspiring young people is one of our central goals. Discussing material use in a broad sense, not simply recyclable materials, increases student awareness of materials and consumption. They consider the source of a piece of paper, the final destination of a plastic bag, and even look critically at product packaging. Incorporating theories of ecosystem health and biodiversity, students increase scientific knowledge of natural processes and human dependence.  All children should have access to these ideas and feel empowered to explore them.  They are encouraged to become responsible individuals, understanding their impact as well as their power to protect the environment.

      Our History

      Picture
Recycle Here! has worked in the Detroit Public Schools since 2007. The partnership, developed with the Office of Math and Science, has reached over 25,000 students.

Recycle Here! supplied each school with an educational package that included a kick off rally with mascot Bee Green, aluminum tokens, posters, labels and an educational video tailored
to the students for teachers to use in the program. Schools collected recyclable materials, which were then picked up by Recycle Here! Additionally, each pickup included a lesson
taught by the Recycle Here! team to a focused class. Schools participated in a competition based on participation, organization, and various activities. The winning school received a cash prize and a mural by local Detroit artist, Carl Oxley III.

The overall focus of the program was to teach the students and their families about how to recycle in the City of Detroit. Curriculum included visiting their neighborhood recycling center, understanding how Detroit processes solid waste and how they can make changes in their home life to reduce their impact on the environment.

      MOVING FORWARD
In summer of 2010, Recycle Here! supported development of an affiliate nonprofit, called Green Living Science, to increase the scope of educational programming. Green Living Science curriculum is applicable for education sessions and workshops in other school districts, as well as for adult education.
In 2007, Recycle Here! launched Schoolcycle, an educational program for the Detroit Public Schools. Developed in partnership with the Office of Math and Science, it was designed to educate students about recycling options in their community, as well as how to reduce waste and increase sustainability. Green Living Science grew out of this initiative, providing a special focus on localized and interactive Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) based environmental education.
